Usage Notes

أماّ. .. ف sets up an explicit topic-contrast (as for X, ... ). What follows أمّا is مرفوع (mubtada). The فـ introduces the comment and is not translated into English. الضمير العائد (The Resumptive Pronoun) Word after أمّا (Mubtada) → something after فـ refers back to it → use a matching ضمير attached to the فعل or حرف الجر / الظرف If a transitive verb after فـ takes the word after أمّا as its object, attach a matching object pronoun to the verb. → قابلتُ صديقي، أمّا أخي فلم أُقابِلْهُ. If a preposition or ظرف after فـ refers back to the word after أمّا, attach a matching pronoun to the preposition or ظرف. → عند أخي كتابٌ واحدٌ، أمّا أختي فعندها كتابان
