Usage Notes

الذي/ التي /etc.= agree in gender/number with a definite antecedent *. مَنْ = whoever (for people, no antecedent needed); مَا = whatever (for things, no antecedent needed); كُلُّ مَنْ / كُلُّ مَا: Same distinction: مَنْ for persons, مَا for things/actions (no antecedent needed). مِمَّا: needs an antecedent statement/fact (not just one noun). * Antecedent for الذي / التي: - the antecedent must be definite. - The relative pronoun agrees with it in gender and number; the dual also agrees in case. * عائد: - The صلة الموصول (relative clause) must contain an عائد (resumptive pronoun) referring back to the antecedent through the relative pronoun. The عائد may be implicit (مستتر) when it is the subject of the verb, but it is expressed as an appropriate ضمير متصل when needed as an object, after a preposition, or an idafa.
